Stop Water Meter Programme Now

Right2Water is calling for the release of Sean Doyle a 66 year old activist suffering from Parkinson's Disease, and Eamon McGrath aged 60, two elderly gentlemen jailed for peacefully protesting against future water poverty, privatisation and the water meter installation programme in Wicklow this week. These gentlemen both have serious health problems and they should be released immediately.

We the undersigned call for the immediate abandonment of the water meter installation programme being carried out by Irish Water and their contractors.

97 TD’s were elected in opposition to water charges campaigning for the abolition of Irish Water. This is a clear majority in the Dail. Instead of upholding their democratic mandate, the government are commencing an “Independent Commission”. If the general public are to have any confidence in the independence and impartiality of the Commission into the future of our water and sanitation services, then logic demands that the privatisation agenda must stop while that Commission carries out its work.

The past Government, the state and even the media failed utterly to conduct a proper public debate into the protection of our water services. Instead a programme of privatisation and water commodification was initiated without any democratic mandate and massive resources have been wasted. Every meter that goes into the ground is a step closer to water privatisation and is a waste of taxpayers’ money. The waste, and the refusal of the body politic to exercise their democratic mandate to abolish this project, must stop immediately.
